Clear
March is a great time to start the process of clearing out the old to make room for the new. The weather can be volatile with nice sunny days and cold rainy/snowy days. Use those days you are not inclined to go outside to begin the process of clearing out some things that need to go to ready yourself for new opportunities that may come along. Here are some tips that may help you.
Tip 1: Workspace. Walk into your workspace and take a good look. Whatever you see is what is going on in your mind. If your workspace is cluttered, piled high with old projects and the top of your desk is hard to find, your energy will be low. It’s difficult to be at the top of your productivity when you’re slogging around trying to find what you need to work on.
Solution: Put everything in a box that’s not relevant to now. Put the box in a corner, behind you or in a closet so you can’t see it. Each morning for a short period of time, start sorting through the box – file, toss or pass the material along until the box is empty. Before leaving your workspace each afternoon, clear off the desk top so you can start each day fresh. See past blog posts: Drowning in paper and Dam the paper for further tips.
Tip 2: Closets and drawers. At home and at work, choose one or two drawers or closets a week. Open them up and look inside. For those you find that are neat and orderly you don’t need to do anything. Target those that are stuffed full or disheveled. Use these steps to clear them out.
Step 1: Take everything out of the drawer or closet.
Step 2: Pick up one item at a time and before you put it back ask yourself if you need to keep the item or piece of paper.
Step 3: Either toss the item, donate the item or place it back in the drawer or closet.
You may find things you forgot you had, which is a great indication that you don’t need the item at all. If you’re thinking you “might” need the item “someday” – most likely you won’t – pass it along to someone who can use it now.
Tip 3: Empty space. Shelves, closets and drawers with empty space allow new things to come into your life. As things fill up, clear out the space. You’ll benefit by being able to see what you have, find things easily and increase your energy. Clarity in what you see translates into clarity in your mind – there is a direct connection.
Tip 4: Clean. As you move through your home and your office, clearing out the old, clean up what you are choosing to keep. This could be as simple as dusting a shelf, wiping down an object or polishing a treasured object. Cleaning out the old cobwebs can clear your mind to be open to new opportunities.
