It’s all good!
Throughout your life you’ll learn new things, acquire new skills and work on all kinds of projects – at home and at work. You may be asked to get involved in seemingly disparate projects. When you were in school, you were required to take certain classes that you may have thought were a waste of your time. I found the following quote that addresses this:
“Don’t throw any of yourself away. Don’t worry about a grand scheme or unified vision for your work. Don’t worry about unity—what unifies your work is the fact that you made it. One day, you’ll look back and it will all make sense.”
It’s a reminder that no matter what you produce, what you’re involved in, what experiences you might have, it’s not a waste of time. The sum of it all enriches and enhances who you are.
I remember when I was in high school I took a required touch typing course during the summer. It seemed such a waste of time – something I would never use again. This was before computers (I’m feeling a bit ancient right now). I didn’t know that this would be a skill that I use every day.
Whenever you find yourself involved in something different or are frustrated when asked to do some mundane task, take a moment to find value.
Emergencies create opportunities to practice and show leadership skills. Mundane tasks can be accomplished in a new way – automate or eliminate them. Seemingly silly things you are asked to do can cause you to think and see things in a completely different way.
Remember – you never know – and you will look back with incredible hindsight!
