Self Promotion
When you look at that phrase “self promotion” what comes to mind? Bragging? Arrogant? Something your mother told you not to do?
Facts are facts – if you’re not going to promote yourself, who is? To get ahead in business, whether you’re in a corporate environment or own your own business, you’ve got to promote yourself.
I don’t have a press agent, do you? Here are some tips that might make self promotion a little easier. You may still feel uncomfortable, which means you’re doing something new and different.
Tip 1: Your boss is going to love you! Each week write a report (a simple email) of what you’ve accomplished, what you’re currently working on and what you plan to finish over the next week. This will highlight all that’s going on and will help you and your boss write your performance evaluation. It’s also a great way to stay focused on what’s important.
Sub-tip: If you’re in business for yourself, it’s also a great way to stay focused and keep things moving forward.
Tip 2: Tell someone. This takes a little practice – one step at a time. Each week tell at least one person what you’ve done. It could be your spouse, your boss or another division head. Say it in a meeting or a casual conversation with someone you run into. The more you do it, the easier it gets.
Sub-tip: Keep it short and on a summary level. If someone wants more detail they will ask you.
Tip 3: Talk about your team or work group. The accomplishments of a group that you’re part of highlights your accomplishments by association.
Tip 4: Use “we,” instead of “I.” It’s easier to talk about what “we” did – somehow psychologically it can take the focus off of you and make things more comfortable. When “we” becomes comfortable, slip in an “I” now and then. You’ll be the only one who notices.
Tip 5: It’s ok to be great! You’re really good at what you do and others should know that. Some people validate their greatness only when someone else points it out. If you do nothing to get noticed and don’t point out your accomplishments, you could be waiting a long time.
What are some ways you’ve tried to get noticed? What’s worked for you and what hasn’t? Please leave a comment so I can learn from you!
